Those who have been in the audience at one of my "career skills" talks will recognize the message that "Guess what! Any job in the information profession IS in sales!". Succeeding after library school is heavily dependent on skills in interpersonal relations, networking, negotiation, committee management, communicating in ways that are appropriate for the target audience, and so on (the shorthand expression is "schmoozing skills").
I completely agree! As a sales professional with an information professional background, I believe a successful practioner in any field must have a "What can I do for you?" proactive approach to be valued. Such a sales approach borrows from its close cousin, marketing. A good sales and marketing professional understands how to tailor the services offered so that the client immediately sees the benefit (what's in it for me). It's easy with practice!
